Virtual Space and the PhD Experience- building a community of practice across Africa

At Drama for Life, Wits University, PhD students are scattered across the African continent only to travel through virtual space to engage with fellow researchers. This is because many students research is conducted, and will be applied, in their country of origin and not in the country where they are registered.  If we argue that human learning is inherently social in nature, how does one facilitate a learning community of researchers when power outages, expensive data and unstable internet connections make even online engagement difficult? Hear about the prize-winning PhD designed by Dr Petro Janse Van Vuuren programme that was the response to these challenges.
